When the United States entered World War II, war production had to increase dramatically in a short amount of time. Women were needed because companies were signing large, lucrative contracts with the government just as all the men were leaving for the service. The government decided to launch a campaign to sell the importance of the war effort and to encourage women to join the workforce. With the poster shown here, they promoted the fictional character of "Rosie the Riveter" as the ideal worker: loyal, efficient, patriotic, and pretty.
