Meals at The Steel were serious business. Workers and their immediate supervisors understood that eating well was part of lasting through a shift. And in areas where machines had to run continuously, someone had to cook so others could eat. There really was a kitchen stove in the MERF (Mobile Equipment Repair Facility). The Coke Works really did have great holiday meals and yes, at one point, the Coke Works really did roast turkeys in the coke ovens.
